The Guardian interviews ImageThink about Graphic Facilitation

Via ImageThink (@ImageThinkRead the article by Killian Fox from SXSW. fb.me/1ISqEJLiw
Several things have contributed to their success. One, according to Herting, is the rise of information visualisation across the media and in business, born out of a fatigue of PowerPoint and the need to communicate clearly and succinctly in a time-starved digital world. Another is a current vogue for hand-drawn visuals, particularly in advertising. "There's a great strength in having a human connection – a hand-drawn image – when everything is so digital," says Willems. "It's a nice contrast."

Without digital cameras and internet connections, of course, ImageThink wouldn't have nearly the same exposure. But at SXSWi, the largest technology festival in the US, where everyone is looking for the next high-tech solution, it's good to know that a lone person drawing on a white surface with a set of coloured marker pens can still hold a crowd in thrall.

Robert Fabricant's PopTech Doodles

Check out the wonderfully compact hybrid storyboard-slash-sketchnote style that frog design creative director, Robert Fabricant, uses to capture big ideas and pithy concepts on the fly.

Robert uses the extremely cost-effective Muji recycled paper thumbnail sketch note ($1.50) tucked into a Muji Denium tag book cover ($5.95).

Read more on how he came across this technique here. Below is the full set of sketchnotes produced during PopTech 2011.

Robert Fabricant is vice president of creative for frog design based in New York, where he leads multidisciplinary design teams for clients such as BBC, Comcast, GE, MTV, Nextel, and Nissan.

Chipp Walters on Visual Facilitation on the iPad

from Chipp Walters:

Here are some sketch notes on a new way to use the iPad to do facilitation. This approach also works with GoToMeeting and WebEx allowing a facilitator to draw on their iPad and share it with all meeting attendees. I also talk about Tunewears fantastic new stylus as well as the best visual note taking app I know of: Neu.Notes+

Wizard Wall Cling Film

Wizard Wall™ is a cling film that turns any indoor surface into an easel without the need for tape, pins, or nails. Wizard Wall film serves as an instant repositionable white board and with its imbedded static charge clings on either side. Wizard Wall has hundreds of uses -- ideal for collaboration, planning and instruction.

Leah Silverman of designbyleah.com writes:
I really like their product and see us using it throughout the week. I've requested that they send you a sample sheet so you can think about how you might use it during the GR training. It won't necessarily replace paper but there are some practice exercises that I can see that could benefit from using whiteboard and erasable markers to reduce the paper footprint, saving space and paper.

I used it at a meeting yesterday with permanent markers instead of paper and really liked that I had an instant permanent chart to hand off to the speaker. It currently comes in rolls of 30 inches by 50 feet. The company is looking to expand the roll size to 42 or 48" to accommodate our needs. It's a green product made of recycled plastic and if used with whiteboard markers can be reused and repositioned over and over again.

Sketchnote Guide to Speaking at SXSW

by Mike Rohde, rohdesign.com

SXSW INTERACTIVE is one of my favorite events of the year, so when Shawn O'Keefe from the SXSW organizing team contacted me about creating a guide for speakers with sketchnote illustrations, I was all in.

Organizing the Details

Shawn provided a list of 9 messages he wanted speakers to remember as they prepared for their panels, which included:

  • Be at Your Green Room an Hour Before Your Session
  • Stay on Topic During Your Session
  • Watch the Time During Your Session
  • Show Your Passion for Your Topic - Have Fun!
  • Get a Good Night's Sleep the Night Before Your Session
  • Treat Fellow Speakers and Audience with Respect
  • Speak into the Microphone and Look at the Audience When You Talk
  • Remind Your Audience to Rate Your Panel or Presentation
  • Start Thinking About SXSW PanelPicker 2013 (Entry Process Starts June 25)

I began mulling these ideas over in my head and then moved to sketching out the concepts that appeared, using pencil and paper.
